Dimitroff, Ph.D. at AHC4 - Academic Health Center 4Charles J. Dimitroff, Ph.D., is a professor at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU Medicine) and a translational glycobiology researcher. His research focuses on how complex sugars, known as glycans, regulate immune and cancer cell functions, with the goal of developing new approaches to strengthen the immune system, combat disease and slow cancer progression.

The Dimitroff Lab at FIU Medicine uses advanced technologies and model systems, including carbohydrate inhibitors, MALDI-TOF-TOF MS/MS, selectin and galectin chimeras, glycosyltransferase mutant models and human tissue samples, to study inflammation, cancer development and metastasis, tumor immune evasion, lymphoma development and other mechanisms of disease.

She received a doctorate in neuropharmacology from Nanjing Medical University and completed postdoctoral training at the Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College in Beijing.

Wu also completed postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. A member of the Shock, Trauma, and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) Center since 2010, she currently serves as associate director of the University of Maryland Medicine Institute for Neuroscience Discovery (UM-MIND).

An internationally recognized tobacco control researcher, Faseru focuses on integrating evidence-based tobacco treatment into health care systems and community settings. He directs the Kansas Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program and leads initiatives that expand smoking cessation capacity among public health, health care and school professionals. A fellow of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, Faseru has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributes to national and global efforts to advance tobacco dependence treatment and population health.

He also serves as an adjunct professor at FIU’s Cuban Research Institute and the Latin American and Caribbean Center.

A distinguished life fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis, Rothe has dedicated his career to advancing mental health care. His work has focused extensively on the mental health needs of immigrant populations, with particular attention to psychological trauma, and he has written widely on these topics.
