Abstract:

Mosquitoes use volatile cues to locate resources such as animal hosts and oviposition sites. Understanding how odorants shape these behaviors may help guide future vector-control strategies. In this seminar, I will discuss two compounds that reduce host-seeking behavior and a computer vision tool for measuring mosquito behavior. First, I will present evidence that indole reduces host-seeking behavior in landing and flight assays. I will then introduce YOLito, an open-source mosquito detector built on YOLO and trained on more than 38,000 images from six laboratories. I will show how it can quantify mosquito activity around oviposition sites. Finally, I will discuss borneol, a plant-derived repellent used for centuries, and evidence that the maxillary palp receptor OR49 contributes to female mosquitoes’ avoidance of borneol. Together, these studies connect mosquito olfaction with high-throughput behavioral measurement.

Short Bio:

Evyatar Sar-Shalom is a PhD student in the Bohbot lab in the Department of Entomology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research examines how odorants influence mosquito host-seeking behavior and how computer vision can improve behavioral measurement. He developed YOLito, an open-source mosquito detector created by fine-tuning YOLO, and uses behavioral assays and automated analysis to study mosquito responses to plant-derived compounds.

Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto is brilliant, precise, and full of motion—an intricate conversation among instruments that still feels alive more than 300 years later. Mendelssohn’s Octet answers with youthful fire: sweeping, urgent, and astonishingly assured for a composer just sixteen years old.

Dr. Rick Mukherjee will present "Qudit-Based Quantum Computing: A New Paradigm." He is the inaugural Director of the UTC Quantum Center and an Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He'll introduce the center's research. Then he'll show how qudits, which are higher-dimensional versions of qubits, can solve hard optimization problems more efficiently than qubit-based methods.

As a starting point for this conversation, our team—Dr. Gabriela Portela (School of Communication), Marianne Lamonaca (The Humanities Edge) and Dr. Aarti Mehta-Kroll (Public Humanities Lab)—worked with NMAH staff to select a hat worn by Savas Zahvala Castro while he was a manual laborer, or bracero, in California.

The Emergency Farm Labor Program, commonly known as the Bracero Program (1942–1964), recruited approximately two million Mexican nationals to come to the United States on short-term labor contracts. Photographs taken by Leonard Nadel in the late 1950s and early 1960s, together with oral histories and artifacts collected as part of the Bracero History Project, form an archive that allows us to continue exploring the program’s impact on American society.

Our invited panelists—Christine Malcolm (Profiles in Black Miami), Dr. Marta Giercyzk (Department of English) and Jeff Guin (Vizcaya Museum and Gardens)—will discuss how they have engaged in community-based historical research using textual, oral history and artifact-based methodologies. They will invite the audience to consider how we can preserve community stories today, capturing the specificity and nuance that may offer future generations valuable insights into this moment in history.

Trumpeter Jean Caze, guitarist Aaron Lebos, pianist Kemuel Roig, bassist Kai Sanchez, saxophonist Dave Fernandez, and drummer Rodolfo Zuniga have established wide-ranging careers as performers, composers, bandleaders, recording artists, and educators. The FIU Music Festival welcomes the Toomai String Quintet for a program bringing together music, dance and the screen—including a suite from Carlos Rafael Rivera’s Grammy-winning score for the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.

Formed at The Juilliard School, Toomai is known for crossing musical traditions and expanding the repertoire for string ensemble. Its commitment to Latin American music has led to more than 30 arrangements and commissions and two acclaimed recordings, Cuerdas Cubanas and Passos Brasileiros.

The program places music by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tania León and Cuban composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer alongside works by three composers with deep ties to FIU: Distinguished University Professor Orlando Jacinto García and alumni Carlos Rafael Rivera ’96 and Marcus Norris ’17.

Rivera’s Queen’s Gambit Suite draws from the score that earned him both Grammy and Emmy awards. A member of the School of Music’s first graduating class in 1996, Rivera has built an acclaimed career in film and television. Norris’s work spans concert music, opera, film and television, often bringing classical music into conversation with hip-hop, R&B and other contemporary traditions.

The concert’s theatrical centerpiece is García’s prohibido (prohibited). Premiered at the New World Center in January 2025 by the New World Symphony with dancers from Miami City Ballet, the work returns in an intimate version for Toomai. Dancers Emily Bromberg and Alexander Sokolov of Dimensions Dance Theatre of Miami perform Ariel Rose’s choreography, with video by Jacek Kolasinski and John Stuart.

Combining music, dance, video and spoken text in English and Spanish, prohibido confronts repression based on race, religion, beliefs, sexual orientation and other aspects of identity. The work reimagines García’s earlier string quartet I Never Saw Another Butterfly, written in memory of the children imprisoned at Terezín.

Between Democratic Hope and Foreign Greed

The political developments of January 2026 transformed Venezuela's political landscape. Yet, months later, the prospects for a meaningful democratic transition remain uncertain. Venezuela continues to face significant challenges, including a longstanding humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the recent earthquake, restrictions on political freedoms and freedom of expression and ongoing concerns about institutional reform. At the same time, new economic and energy agreements have renewed debate about the relationship between economic recovery, extractive models of growth and democratic governance.

Join us for a timely discussion on the current state of Venezuela's transition and the challenges and debates shaping its future. Are recent developments laying the groundwork for meaningful democratization, or are they primarily benefiting political elites and foreign interests? The program pairs Liszt’s solo works with music by Afro-Cuban composer and virtuoso pianist José Manuel Jiménez (1852–1917). López presents Jiménez’s solo piano works and two chamber compositions, while Baker—who made her Carnegie Hall debut with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas—joins him for a selection of Lieder.

FIU Artist-in-Residence and longtime Miami International Piano Festival artist Kemal Gekić brings his celebrated command of Liszt to the composer’s solo piano works. His performances and recordings have earned international acclaim, including the Rosette Award from The Penguin Guide to Classical Recordings for his recording of the Rossini-Liszt transcriptions.

Presented in collaboration with the South Florida Chapter of the American Liszt Society, the concert places a towering figure of the Romantic era alongside a compelling Afro-Cuban voice deserving of wider recognition.

Beginning in the 1960s, the Soviet Union was challenged by a dissident movement that captured the world’s imagination. Against all odds, these courageous individuals undermined the fearsome Soviet system and helped hasten its collapse three decades later. Taking its title from a toast offered at dissident gatherings, Dr. Nathans’s book tells the story of a remarkable group of people whose moral courage helped change the world. Their activism inspired movements in other totalitarian regimes, including Castro’s Cuba. Despite the island’s distance from the Soviet Union—geographically and culturally—the parallels between the Soviet and Cuban dissident movements are striking. This event explores a powerful story of hope and the enduring supremacy of human dignity over tyranny.

Allison Joseph is a Professor of English at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, the editor of Crab Orchard Review and the director of the Young Writers Conference. Her most recent books of poems are Dwelling (Red Hen Press, 2025), Blue Streak (Glass Lyre Press, 2025) and Lexicon (Red Hen Press, 2021, and Poetry By The Sea Best Book of the Year Award winner). Her collection Confessions of a Barefaced won the 2019 Feathered Quill Book Award and was a finalist for the 2019 NAACP Image Award in Poetry. She was named Illinois Author of the Year for 2022 by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. Her poems have appeared in the New York Times and in the Best American Poetry Series and on the poetry podcast The Slowdown. She is the widow of beloved poet and editor Jon Tribble. She lives in Carbondale, Illinois.

The theme for this year’s festival is Chroma in Motion. At this year’s Festival of the Trees, designers are invited to explore the spectrum of chroma as a catalyst for design. Through thoughtful shifts, gradations, and transitions of color, designers can shape the emotional experience of the viewer and transform the mood of the environment.

Designers are challenged to explore the physical processes of light refraction, dispersion, and spectral separation as forces that flow, fracture, radiate, and echo. Designers are encouraged to interpret these processes through various mediums, forms, compositions and patterns.

For members of the FIU Community, tickets are ONLY $60! This includes current students, faculty, and staff. These are limited to (2) per FIU member and must be purchased with proof of Panther ID at Zinaida's office: PCA 277B, on the MMC, M-F from 9am to 4:30pm.

During her career in the Florida House, Senator Flores served as Deputy Majority Leader, Chair of the PreK-12 Appropriations Committee, and Chair of the PreK-12 Policy Committee. Prior to being elected a State Representative, she spent two years advocating for university students in her district as Director of State Relations for Florida International University.
