6699 Windmill Gate Rd, Miami Lakes, FL 33014 Free Event

Free Event
The American Concrete Institute (ACI) student chapter of Florida International University is proud to announce its first outreach activity with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. It is a two-hour event where the principles of bridge design and construction will be taught to children and teens from the ages 8-12. Two activities are scheduled: building of a Thin-plate bridge and Balsa wood bridge.
Goals:
Thin-plate bridge
- Students will try to fold sheets of papers in different patterns to create a stronger bridge. Changing the fold pattern and the span length will change the load (pennies) the section can hold.
Balsa Wood Bridge
- Students will learn the three basic shapes used in bridge construction. A bridge will be built with one of the basic shapes by using balsa wood as frame elements. Finally, the bridge is tested with a small moving load (toy car).
PLEASE RSVP IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE AS A VOLUNTEER HERE
Transportation could be provided to the activity location

In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
