ADA Technical Training: Accessible Event Planning at FIU

This training equips Florida International University (FIU) members with the foundational knowledge and practical tools needed to plan, document, and execute accessible events that align with federal disability laws and university policy. Grounded in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and FIU’s own commitment to access, this training explores best practices in event coordination, proactive accommodation planning, and digital accessibility.
Developed in collaboration with the Southeast ADA Center and FIU’s Civil Rights Compliance and Accessibility (CRCA) office, the training includes real-life case studies, universal design principles, and actionable compliance strategies. Participants will leave equipped to plan inclusive programs with clarity around their legal obligations and practical support resources.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand your legal obligations under the ADA, ADAAA, and Section 504
- Learn how to proactively design and document accessible events
- Recognize common accommodation requests and how to respond appropriately
- Apply inclusive digital and physical design strategies
- Leverage internal university supports and systems such as the Event Management System (EMS)
