DESCRIPTION:Please join us remotely for a seminar by Victor Ginting from Un
iveristy of Wyoming.\n\nAbstract. \n\nA semi-analytical solution of the Ri
 chards Equation on a two-layered one-dimensional soil is derived under a c
onstraint that the constitutive relations are exponentially dependent on t
he pressure head. It allows for a transformation of the equation into a li
near parabolic partial differential equation that governs a spatial-tempor
al function that represents the hydraulic conductivity. The solution is ex
pressed as a linear combination of a set of eigenfunctions derived from a
novel Sturm-Liouville problem that reflects the layer system and an auxili
ary function that depends only on the spatial variable and the pressure he
ad at the interface. All the relevant coefficients in the representation s
atisfy a nonlinear differential-algebraic system gathered from imposing th
e continuity of the pressure head and its flux at the interface. A Newton
method of iteration is applied to solve the resulting algebraic system. Se
veral pertinent numerical experiments demonstrating the approach are discu
ssed.\n\nThis is joint work with Tilsa Aryeni\, Department of Mathematics
& Statistics\, University of Wyoming\n\nHosted by Hakima Bessiah.
