“Avoiding Plagiarism through Alternative Assessments”
About this Event
Frustrated by Honorlock and its pitfall for student learning? This workshop will focus on alternative assessments that use writing to gauge student learning and engage student learners while minimizing opportunity for academic dishonesty. Research shows that writing assignments and projects help students to develop and hone their communication skills and improve their writing effectiveness within various disciplines. Incorporating more writing into your courses is a high-impact way to deepen students’ understanding of your course content, promote in-class participation and engagement, and assess student understanding of course material. In addition, writing can be one alternative to assess student learning beyond traditional exams. During the first half of this workshop, we will discuss why faculty should consider assessments beyond traditional exams, provide assignment examples from various academic disciplines, and address ways writing assignments can help prevent cheating in online/remote assessment. In addition, the workshop will feature special guest presenter Dr. Uma Swamy, FIU Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Biochemistry who has successfully incorporated alternative assessment into her teaching. In the second half of the workshop, participants will apply these ideas to their own teaching by designing alternative assessments catered to their specific pedagogical aims.
