Free Event

Join us for an insightful conversation with photographer Robert Nickelsberg, moderated by Dr. Jose Miguel Cruz, Director of the Center for the Administration of Justice at FIU.

In the early 1980’s, Central America was engulfed in the ramifications of the Cold War, the U.S. defeat in the Vietnam war, and the rivalry between the U.S. government under President Ronald Reagan and the former Soviet Union and Cuba ruled by Fidel Castro. Robert Nickelsberg spent 1981-1984 based in El Salvador photographing for Time magazine during its civil war and most violent period of a 12 year conflict. With this new book, Legacy of Lies, El Salvador, 1981-1984, Nickelsberg has a collection of unpublished black and white photos with essays by four reporters he worked with and admires: Jon Lee Anderson, Carlos Dada, Alma Guillermoprieto, and Scott Wallace.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
