For the most part, when we talk about pedagogy, we tend to focus exclusively on how we teach. We think about course design, assignments, and discussion exercises; we ask ourselves how we can do a better job of pursuing our learning objectives. Less time is usually spent asking why we teach and what we hope to accomplish in our classrooms. What do we think is the point of higher education and why do we think our learning outcomes matter to students? Those are the questions we will address as we read The Aims of Higher Education: Problems of Morality and Justice. By thinking critically about the purpose of higher education, we will reflect on the content and methodology of our courses. We will come to a better understanding of what we are trying to do and how we can accomplish those goals.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
