#BSITitle: Building the Next Generation of Biomaterials: My Path and Research Outlook
By Wonmin Choi, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Abstract
Smart biomaterials have the potential to transform how we deliver therapies and interact with the environment. Dr. Choi's research centers on the molecular design of stimuli-responsive polymers, peptide/protein hydrogels, and nanoparticle–hydrogel hybrids that enable controlled and on-demand therapeutic release for biomedical challenges in drug delivery and tissue repair. Beyond biomedical use, these materials also open new possibilities for environmental applications, such as responsive filtration systems, pollutant capture, and sustainable material design. In this talk, he will share his academic path and outline how advancing biomaterial design principles can open new opportunities across health and environmental science.
Short Bio
Dr. Wonmin Choi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Florida International University (FIU). He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Seoul National University and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Northwestern University, where he worked under the guidance of Prof. Nathan Gianneschi, developing signal-responsive biomaterials and peptide brush polymers. He then completed his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, under the guidance of Prof. Daniel Kohane, focusing on the development of smart biomaterials for drug delivery. His current research integrates polymer chemistry, biomaterials engineering, and materials science to create advanced platforms for controlled drug delivery, tissue repair, and environmental sustainability. Looking ahead, his work aims to push the boundaries of biomaterial design to enable innovations that impact both human health and the environment.
The seminar will take place in person on Friday, October 10th, 2025, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM in WC 130, MMC Campus.
Light refreshments and snacks will be provided from 11:30 AM to noon, followed by the Seminar at 12:00 PM.
Students, please bring your OneCard.
