Samuel S. Shapiro (Sam as he liked to be called) was a member of the founding faculty of FIU. He served FIU in many capacities as both a professor and an administrator in various roles, and always had a vision for FIU to become a great university. As an administrator he was known for his efficiency and organizational abilities. When he was Chair of the Faculty Assembly, who can forget the red light he used to remind individuals of time during meetings!
As a statistician Sam is known for developing the famous “Shapiro-Wilk test for Normality” He was a truly great colleague and mentor and helped the career trajectory of everyone who worked with him. Sam loved FIU and did everything he could to help it grow. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
