Documentary Produced by Instituto de la Memoria Historica Cubana

Participants: Wenceslao Cruz (Film Director), Pedro Corzo (Film Producer)

Between 1964 and 1965, a secret war was taking place in north-eastern Congo. With Fidel Castro’s support, a guerrilla group called ‘the Simbas,’ staged a rebellion against the Congolese government. A special commando of Congolese troops, supported by the U.S., mounted a military operation to push the Simbas out of Congo. The CIA operation included a group of Cuban exile operators called ‘The Makasi.’ This documentary explores the experiences of some of those veterans who fought in the front lines of a silent war waged in several African countries to thwart communist intervention.

This event is cosponsored by the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy at FIU. It will be held in Spanish. It is free and open to the public.
