Since 1959 Cuba has been under a totalitarian regime that violates individual freedoms. The public exercise of certain religious practices is actively suppressed, and official repression forces many citizens into obedience or simulation. Others, however, have openly raised their voices in support of fundamental freedoms such as religion and speech.
