Recognizing Interconnected Problems After Intimate Violence: Implications for Psychological Science and Social Change.

The last fifty years have ushered in transformative change in public awareness and scientific understanding of gender-based violence, particularly violence against women. Despite such progress, a woman is still victimized by a current or former intimate partner every 90 seconds and another is sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, communities across the country struggle to meet victims’ health, legal, and social service needs, and intimate violence continues to be marginalized as a woman’s issue. Thus, new strategies to prevent and respond to intimate violence are urgently needed. Building on lessons from social change movements, this talk will present research on the interconnections between violence against women and other pressing public problems that affect health – from healthcare and economic inequities to gun violence and legal system responses to crime. Drawing on those interconnections, we will consider implications for psychological science, multidisciplinary responses, and social change, outlining new approaches to collaboration among health and allied professionals and communities to prevent and respond effectively to violence against women.

Dr. DePrince studies the impact of violence and trauma, particularly on women and children. You can learn more about her work here:https://liberalarts.du.edu/about/people/anne-p-deprince
