Free Event

Join the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Florida Grand Opera, and Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ for a very special program that explores the piercing themes of Gregory Spear's highly praised opera, Fellow Travelers (based on the best-selling 2007 novel by Thomas Mallon). A spoken word program set against Spears’ powerful music, “Destination Retrograde” explores the opera’s tragic story of a love affair between two young men at the height of the Red and Lavender Scares in the 1950s while highlighting the underlying and heartbreakingly timely topics of disinformation, the relationship between law and morality, and the dangers of a tyranny of the majority.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
