Effects of Tobacco Smoke and Vaping on Lung Inflammation with Irfan Rahman, Ph.D.
Tuesday, February 4, 2025 12pm to 1pm
About this Event
11200 SW 8th ST, Academic Health Center 4, Miami, Florida 33199
Irfan Rahman, Ph.D, is a professor of Environmental Medicine, Medicine (Pulmonary), and Public Health Sciences at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Rahman's lab focuses on exploring redox signaling and the mechanisms of inflammation, with a particular emphasis on chronic lung diseases like COPD. The team investigates chromatin remodeling and epigenetic changes, the role of anti-inflammatory and anti-aging proteins such as sirtuins, DNA damage and repair, and cellular senescence. Recent research includes studying the involvement of sirtuins and HDACs in aging, accelerated lung function decline, cellular senescence, and circadian regulation. The goal is to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving chronic inflammatory lung diseases caused by environmental toxicants—such as tobacco smoke, e-cigarettes, and oxidants/aldehydes—often in combination with HIV infection, and to identify potential therapeutic interventions for airway diseases.
Lunch will be provided.
RSVP HERE by January 20.
This event is part of the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership in Healthcare and Medicine Lecture Series.
