Oxygen Radicals, Nitric Oxide and Peroxynitrite: Redox Pathways in Human Health, Disease and Aging

Rafael Radi, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor and chairman of Biochemistry and director of the Center for Biomedical Research at the Universidad de la República, Uruguay.

The lecture will cover the concepts of redox signaling and oxidative stress and their associated molecular mechanisms. Biochemical processes leading to protein oxidative modifications such as tyrosine nitration may result in the disruption of mitochondrial and cell homeostasis, cell degeneration and death. Thus, peroxynitrite-dependent redox reactions participate in the initiation and progression of disease conditions and aging. Finally, the talk will cover current experimental strategies for detection and removal of transient reactive species in vitro and in vivo and how these approaches can be applied to determining the role of redox pathways in human health, disease, and aging.

Please RSVP by November 4.

This session is part of the Dr. Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Leadership in Healthcare and Medicine Lecture Series.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
