Management of Mood and Alcohol Use Disorders Comorbidity: Evidence-based Approaches
Abstract: Mood and alcohol use disorders are among the most frequent psychiatric disorders worldwide. Comorbidity of mood and alcohol use disorder is among the most frequently encountered conditions in clinical practice. These comorbidities carry a high risk for chronicity, treatment resistance, morbidity and for suicide. Care for these complex conditions represent a significant challenge for clinicians. Effective interventions for these patients are still sorely lacking. Pharmaceutical companies have shied away from developing medications for these complex group of conditions. Therefore, there is still an unmet treatment needs for these patients. This presentation will review clinical trials for mood (bipolar disorder and major depression) and alcohol use disorder comorbidity along with innovative interventions targeting neuroinflammation for these conditions. It will also discuss the development of a multidisciplinary, clinical-translational research program across the life span with special focus on aging population.
