Abstract

This lecture examines urban peripheries as spaces where migration, informal economies, and environmental precarity intersect. Drawing on ongoing field research in India, including an ICSSR-funded migration project, it explores how water insecurity, waste ecologies, land-use change, housing and labour shape migrant experiences of the city. It argues for understanding displacement not simply as geographic movement, but as an ongoing condition produced through unequal infrastructures and urban governance, with wider implications for environmental resilience and sustainability.
