Title: "Environmental Science in the Era of Big Data: Using Data Science to Explore Blue Carbon Ecosystem Responses to Global Change" by Elena Solohin,

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Institute of Environment, FIU

Abstract

Blue carbon ecosystems, particularly tidal wetlands and
mangrove forests, play a crucial role in climate change
mitigation strategies both nationally and internationally.
Enhancing our understanding of carbon and nutrient cycling is
essential for integrating these ecosystems more effectively
into climate models and policy frameworks. This presentation
will focus on the integration of detailed field measurements
with expansive remote sensing data, underscoring a
multidimensional approach to studying the spatiotemporal
dynamics in these ecosystems. Examples from Biscayne
National Park in South Florida, the Mississippi River Delta, and
the Southeast Atlantic coast will demonstrate the practical
applications of this approach.

Dr. Elena Solohin is a Wetland Ecologist in the Institute of
Environment at Florida International University. Focusing on
the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems, she
employs field measurements and remote sensing to
understand how coastal wetlands respond to sea-level rise,
land use changes, and human disturbances. Her research has
covered a range of ecosystems, including the Everglades and
Biscayne National Parks in South Florida, and the coastal
regions of Louisiana, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Lake Erie.
