Putting science to work: bridging academia and industry

by Dr. Sharon Ewe Principal Ecologist at Stantec Consulting Inc.

Dr. Sharon Ewe is a principal ecologist at a multi-national consulting firm, Stantec Consulting Inc., and an affiliate faculty member with University of South Florida. For the last 20 years, she has conducted research across Florida in the Everglades, Biscayne Bay and in the Indian River Lagoon. Her work spans a broad range of ecological areas, from examining nutrient limitations, studying the ecology of tree islands and invasive species, monitoring harmful algal blooms, monitoring marsh-mangrove ecosystem productivity, evaluating saltwater intrusion in coastal groundwaters, to managing a 7,000 acre mitigation bank in southwest Florida. Much of her research is being done in support of regulatory and legal compliance needs. Dr. Ewe strongly supports mentorship and has mentored a number of students in their graduate work and undergraduate research; she is a strong proponent of training competent students who will graduate to become passionate environmental advocates and technically competent applied research scientists.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
