Thursday, December 12, 2024 11:30am to 1pm
About this Event
11200 SW 8th Street
Leticia Nogueira, PhD, MPH, is a Scientific Director of Health Services research at the American Cancer Society. Dr. Nogueira’s research focuses on cancer disparities that can be addressed through policy changes, especially those related to climate change and structural racism. She will be leading the first Climate and Health chapter in the Sixth National Climate Assessment. She was selected as one of the inaugural NIH Climate Change and Health Scholars in 2023 and was inducted into the Hall of Honors at the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. Earlier in her career she received the Fellows Award for Research Excellence from the National Institutes of Health and the Woman in Cancer Research Award from the American Association for Cancer Research.
Dr. Nogueira’s research focuses of determinants of cancer disparities that can be addressed by policy changes. She pioneered research on the link between climate change and cancer, with several empirical studies demonstrating the connection at each step of the cancer control continuum, from cancer prevention to survivorship. This presentation will highlight the scientific evidence of the connection between climate change and cancer as well as conceptual frameworks for identifying and implementing solutions with climate and cancer co-benefits at the individual, institutional, and policy-level.
The Environmental Health Science seminar series approach the most relevant and emerging aspects of modern Occupational and Environmental Health. They include exposure and mechanistic sciences, toxicological and epidemiological approaches linking experimental and human research to prevention and protective policy making.
Pre- and post-doctoral students and faculties of the FIU EHS Department share their studies in this series, along with prominent external speakers.
