Join us on Tuesday, September 10 for an insightful lecture by Dr. Jonathan de Oleo Ramos: "El Gagá: An Afro-Dominican Cultural and Religious Manifestation. "

People in the Dominican Republic have historically neglected Black culture. This neglect has resulted in limited recognition and persecution of the historical and modern manifestations of the legacy of enslaved Africans.

El Gagá, a religious cult practiced in the Dominican Republic and other Latin American countries, is a prime example of this dynamic. It takes place during Lent and Holy Week and is known for its dances, music, rituals, hierarchies, religious aspects, and other unique characteristics.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
