Join us NEXT WEEK for the opening of Filling Narrative Gaps: The Stories of Refuseniks in South Florida. Featuring photography by Gary Monroe, the exhibition chronicles the stories of Soviet Union Jewish immigrants who arrived in South Florida in the 1980s. Known as refuseniks because the Soviet government refused their exit visas, these Jews were jailed and tortured, lost their jobs and were thrown out of their homes after applying to emigrate. The story of refuseniks reflects a forgotten chapter in the history of South Florida as a haven for the oppressed. It is a story that must be told and remembered.

The theme of the first panel discussion is Beginnings and Backgrounds.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
