About this Event

Led by Professor Michael Eckroth, the FIU Latin Jazz Ensemble explores Latin and Afro-Cuban jazz styles spanning the past 50 years. The group highlights the rich intersections of jazz and big band traditions with folkloric Latin rhythms, blending harmonic and melodic sophistication with vibrant cultural roots. The Miami New Times named the ensemble “Best Latin Act” in 2020.
Comprised of both undergraduate and graduate students from FIU’s jazz program, the ensemble showcases the next generation of dynamic performers.
This concert features a diverse program reflecting key periods and expressions of Afro-Cuban jazz—from the influence of the Fort Apache Band and Machito to arrangements inspired by Cal Tjader and Danilo Pérez. The program also includes beloved Cuban classics and the Brazilian standard “Flor de Lis” by Djavan.
