COVID-19 emerges as a pandemic. The need for accurate, complete, and timely data is profound. The volume of misinformation and disinformation is almost unbelievable. There exist many unknowns and the generation of scientific and pseudo-scientific information is as rapid as ever before. This is a story that is emblematic of how many public health professionals have answered the public’s call to service, the challenges of doing so, and some lessons learned from being cast in an unfamiliar center stage position.
