#fiuwertheimmusic #fiumusicThe FIU Wind Ensemble proudly presents the final installment of our concert series, entitled "Passions." This special event, titled "Going Home," commemorates the remarkable legacy of our Director of Bands, Professor Bernhardt, as he retires from his illustrious career, alongside honoring the journey of Dr. Brenton Alston's parents.
The concert commences with "Fanfare Canzonique," a piece for brass by composer Brian Balmages, originally crafted for the renowned trumpet player Gill Johnson. This stirring work will be conducted by the world-renowned tubist Patrick Sheridan, featuring alumni from the Wertheim School of Music Brass section, paying tribute to our esteemed late Professor James Hacker.
Following this grand opening, Professor Bernhardt will grace the stage to conduct the FIU Wind Ensemble in a selection of cherished pieces. This includes a rare march by J.P. Sousa, "Easter Monday on the White House Lawn," a magnificent transcription of Shostakovich's "Prelude in Eb," and culminating with Percy Grainger's renowned "Lincolnshire Posey."
After a brief interlude, the ensemble will reunite for two eagerly anticipated world premieres. The first premiere features an arrangement by faculty artist Russ Spiegel of Joni Mitchell's iconic "Blue." The second premiere, composed by James Syler, pays homage to Dr. Alston's parents. This groundbreaking piece incorporates chamber winds, organ, women's chorus, a recorded narrator, and a soprano speaker.
We invite you to join us and partake in the celebration of "Going Home," an evening filled with music, nostalgia, and heartfelt tributes.
