Want to read a great book? Want to connect with other English majors? Join us this semester to discuss the novel We the Animals (2011), by Justin Torres. This award-winning story centers on the coming-of-age of a Puerto Rican boy in upstate New York as he navigates his complicated relationship with the various members of his family, each going through their own journey. We will also watch and discuss the acclaimed 2018 film adaptation of the novel, directed by Jeremiah Zagar in 2018.

Our conversations will be led by Gabriel Mayora, Assistant Teaching Professor in English and Gender & Women’s Studies, and Jason Pearl, Associate Professor in English. Simply purchase the book, read the first half, and come to our first meeting, on September 22 at 2:00 in DM 457. We will read the second half for the second session on October 20 and discuss the film in the last session on November 17. Students who attend all meetings will receive a reimbursement for the book. If you would like to attend via Zoom, please email jpearl@fiu.edu. Light refreshments will be offered. Hope to see you there!

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
