FIU in DC: The Future of Environmental Resilience for Economic Growth and National Security
Wednesday, April 7, 2021 9am to 5pm
About this Event
FIU’s DC Fly-Ins are three-day experiential seminars focused on exploring how policies are made, and what career opportunities exist in the capital for students passionate about a variety of issues. The itineraries consist of engaging conversations and experiences with experts across government, academia and industry. Each Fly-In includes an opportunity to draft policy solutions and to participate in advocacy meetings on Capitol Hill. The theme for this Fly-In is:
A sustainable planet and flourishing economy need not be at odds. FIU researchers are leading efforts to increase resilience against the major environmental challenges identified in the state’s mitigation action plan: coastal erosion, ecosystem degradation, flooding, heat, sea-level rise, and windstorms. The growing field of environmental finance also aims to reduce the risk of financial losses due to our changing climate - resulting in new investments in renewable energy and coastal infrastructure. These positive environmental outcomes conserve funds, infrastructure, and institutions from current levels of disaster recovery, leaving the U.S. ins a stronger position of national security.
