This lecture will discuss the emergence of lexical blends in modern Slovene (and some other languages), and compare this to the situation in modern English. Wordformationally, blends are a fairly recent phenomenon in Slovene as the language system has traditionally preferred other word-formational processes, particularly affixation. Slovene blends are taken to exemplify the general characteristics of blends also in other European languages, and a classification of blends is proposed. The influence of the English language on the formation of such coinages in the Slovene language is discussed, and the types of texts in which blends tend to appear most frequently presented (i.e. marketing texts, children’s literature, blogs and forums). A distinction is made between blends imported into Slovene and blends made originally by Slovene following English models.
