It has become harder to do feminism in higher education. Gender and sexuality studies faculty, students, and activists see their work devalued and attacked. The goal of Floridian, and now also federal policies appears to be eliminating gender studies altogether.

How do we respond to this? How do we, in our different roles, experience this intellectual onslaught and how do we interpret it? What coping mechanisms and strategies of resistance have we developed, and how can we find ways to support each other?

Please join our discussion with input statements from:

Alex Cornelius, Director of the Center for Women and Gender Studies, Florida International University

Brianna N Hernandez, PhD Candidate in International Relations, FIU, and Gordon Morgan Fellow, Political Science, University of Arkansas

Juliana Restrepo Sanin, Assistant Professor of Political Science, University of Florida

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
