The Barry Goldwater Scholarship is the nation’s most prestigious math and science award for undergraduates. It provides up to $7,500 in scholarship support to students in eligible fields. The purpose of this highly-competitive award is to support the next generation of outstanding research scientists.

You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident to apply. Both sophomores and juniors are eligible.

Competitive applicants are those who:
- Have a strong GPA (generally 3.7 or higher)
- Have participated in undergraduate research
- Have presented research at campus, regional, or national conferences
- Have published research (while not required, a submitted or accepted publication is helpful)

While the competition is technically open to students who want to pursue an MD/PhD, the MD must be necessary for the research. Goldwater prefers candidates who plan to apply for PhD programs, not MD/PhD.

Institutional nomination is required.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
