DESCRIPTION:Please join us welcoming Ph.D student Melissa De Jesus for this
week's graduate student seminar. \n\nOur Graduate Student Seminar gives s
tudents the ability to showcase interesting results that they have found in
their research. Presenters are typically graduate students in mathemathema
tics\, but can also be undergraduates\, students in other disiplines\, and
faculty as well. \n\nPresentations should be able to be understood by under
graduate students in mathematics or related disipline.\n\nAbstract: We cons
ider a doubly nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation (dnCHE) which describes phase
separation of a binary system\, but replace the classical time derivative
with a Caputo fractional time derivative. In doing so\, this modification c
an be used to model dynamic processes in which particles are thought to hav
e some ‘memory’. We establish both the existence and uniqueness of a soluti
on to this modified equation. Then\, using a combination of a forward Euler
scheme and a convolution quadrature rule we numerically approximate our mi
ld solution. We establish convergence of mild solutions to that of the mild
solution of the dnCHE when the order of the fractional derivative approach
es 1.
