The 100-year-old historic Waikoko Bridge was severely damaged during a storm event in 2018 that produced floods and extensive damage throughout the area. The bridge along with the nearby Waipa Bridge required replacement. Access through this route was severely impacted, with resident access limited to certain hours of the day. KSF, Inc. proposed a two-precast-girder solution with precast deck, placed during a single weekend closure, to meet the Hawaii DOT’s need for an innovative way to replace the bridges while work continued throughout the area to repair flood damage. All time-consuming work was done without affecting travel on the existing single-lane bridge. Once the micropile foundations were completed, the precast girders and deck units were placed nearby to facilitate placement. The roadway was then closed and the bridge replaced over the weekend. The Waipa Bridge was similarly completed. This method eliminated a costly temporary bypass bridge and the significant ecological effects the temporary bridge would have had on the wetlands adjoining the existing bridges. Design and construction details and lessons learned will be discussed.
