DESCRIPTION:The 100-year-old historic Waikoko Bridge was severely damaged d
 uring a storm event in 2018 that produced floods and extensive damage thro
 ughout the area. The bridge along with the nearby Waipa Bridge required re
 placement. Access through this route was severely impacted\, with resident
  access limited to certain hours of the day. KSF\, Inc. proposed a two-pre
 cast-girder solution with precast deck\, placed during a single weekend cl
 osure\, to meet the Hawaii DOT’s need for an innovative way to replace t
 he bridges while work continued throughout the area to repair flood damage
 . All time-consuming work was done without affecting travel on the existin
 g single-lane bridge. Once the micropile foundations were completed\, the 
 precast girders and deck units were placed nearby to facilitate placement.
  The roadway was then closed and the bridge replaced over the weekend. The
  Waipa Bridge was similarly completed. This method eliminated a costly tem
 porary bypass bridge and the significant ecological effects the temporary 
 bridge would have had on the wetlands adjoining the existing bridges. Desi
 gn and construction details and lessons learned will be discussed.
