Join us for the first edition of the Honors Leadership Speaker Series by welcoming our special guest, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.  This first edition of the Honors Leadership Speakers Series will be hosted by none other than our President Emeritus, Dr. Modesto A. Maidique.  President Emeritus Modesto A. Maidique and Mr. Greenblatt will be engaging in a discussion about Leadership, its impact on our own current world, and how leadership can affect the present and future of all generations to come.

Jonathan Greenblatt is the CEO and National Director of ADL (Anti-Defamation League), the world's leading anti-hate organization with a distinguished record of fighting antisemitism and advocating for just and fair treatment of all.  Jonathan joined ADL in 2015 after serving in the White House as special assistant to President Obama and director of the Office of Social Innovation and Civil Participation.  He joined the government after a distinguished career in business as a successful social entrepreneur and corporate executive: he co-founded Ethos Brands, the company that launched Ethos Water, which was acquired by Starbucks, founded All for Good, and served as a senior executive at realtor.com.  Since becoming CEO, Jonathan has modernized ADL while refocusing it on the mission it has had since its founding in 1913: to fight the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment for all.  Under Jonathan, ADL has modernized its operations, innovated its approaches to counter antisemitism from all sides, and enhanced its efforts to combat extremism in all forms.

Modesto "Mitch" Maidique, PhD served as President of Florida International University for 23 years, becoming the first Cuban-American to lead an American university.  During his tenure, Dr. Maidique founded the Schools of Engineering, Law, Public Health, and Medicine, and he added a Division I-A football team and a Phi Beta Kappa chapter.  Under his leadership, FIU tripled in physical size, and grew to 40,000 students.  Dr. Maidique currently serves as the Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Eminent Scholar Chair in Leadership at the FIU College of Business, where he founded the Center for Leadership.  Dr. Maidique holds a Ph.D. from MIT, and he completed the Program for Leadership Development at the Harvard Business School.  Dr. Maidique has testified before Congress on the issues of energy conservation and energy financing and has served on the Educational Policy Advisory Committee for two United States Presidents.  He has also served on the Secretary of Energy's Advisory Board and the Commission on Presidential Scholars.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
