In 1995, Florida International University commissioned Cuban composer Aurelio de la Vega (1925-2022) to write Transparent Songs (Canciones transparentes), a piece honoring the memory of Jose Marti (1853-1895) in the centennial of his death. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the premiere of that piece at FIU and the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth, this lecture will analyze Canciones transparentes and its relationship to the five poems by Marti on which it is based. How a creative dialogue is established between a 20th-century classical composer and the 19th-century hero and poet is the challenge and objective of this timely event.

This event is free and open to the public. It will be held in Spanish. To confirm your in-person attendance, please write cri@fiu.edu or call (305) 348–1991.
