This presentation examines the use of the Creole language in the power negotiation between social actors in the quest for achieving sociopolitical and economic objectives. Moreover, the presenter will emphasize the ways the Creole language often extends beyond its traditional linguistic function to serve as an instrument of influence and negotiation.

Dr. Nahum Jean-Louis will explore how the Haitian Creole language transcends its traditional linguistic role to become a powerful tool for influence and negotiation. This presentation aims to deepen participants’ and the public’s understanding of Creole not only as a means of social interaction but also as an instrument of power dynamics.

Moderated by Prof. Nicolas Andre, FIU Haitian Studies Program Director.

This event will be conducted in Haitian Creole.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
