Naval Opportunity Awareness Workshop

This is a past event.

Thursday, August 31

FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique campus

The 2023 Naval Opportunity Awareness Workshop (OAW) will be held in-person from August 31 - September 1 at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique campus.

The OAW is the Department of the Navy (DoN) Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Program’s premier event for outreach and engagement of Minority-Serving Institutions.  In direct alignment with the Program’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the purpose of the workshop is to provide the HBCU/MI community with first-hand information about research, fellowship, and internship opportunities that span the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Naval Research and Development Establishment (NR&DE).  In addition to expanding awareness of opportunities, the OAW is strategically structured to encourage direct interaction between HBCU/MI students, faculty, administrators, and defense agency program directors, managers, and coordinators.

Additionally, a special workshop just for students is scheduled on August 30, which will focus on internship and scholarship opportunities.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
