Operation Moses was the covert rescue of more than 10,000 Beta Israel – the Ethiopian Jews – from the 1984 famine and civil war. Thousands of members of this community, who lived for centuries in the region, sought to return to their ancestral homeland. They traveled by foot to refugee camps in Sudan and were eventually taken in this remarkable operation to a new life in Israel, further enriching the diverse mosaic of people in the state.

This event will feature a panel discussion with individuals who were part of or witnessed Operation Moses and have written about the historic mission and the Ethiopian Jewish community, as well as an  exhibition of artefacts and photographs that bring this historic operation to life. Two of our panelists have their work featured in the exhibition.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
