Orwellian: Hear the Proles Speak!

This is a past event.

Thursday, March 9 at 1:00pm to 2:30pm

SASC - Student Academic Success Center, Rm 100
11200 SW 8th ST, Student Academic Success Center, Miami, Florida 33199

The Center for the Humanities in an Urban Environment has teamed up with FIU's Department of English to shine a light on the work of some of the major literary figures of the 20th Century in the English language.

We thought there was no better place to start than with the work of George Orwell, whose novels Animal Farm (1945) and 1984 (1949), published in the wake of World War II, told cautionary tales of dystopic futures characterized by authoritarianism, historical revisionism, censorship, and mass surveillance.

In “Orwellian: Hear the Proles Speak!” - our first fully in-person event since March 2020 - we will hear from FIU English Professor Nathanial Cadle (“Newspeak and the Present”), before sharing our favorite passages from Orwell’s works.

We are excited to share this moment of camaraderie, solidarity, and shared intellectual inquiry with you in person Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 1:00 PM in SASC-100!

“Orwellian” is co-sponsored by the Humanities Edge Program

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
