Title: Parametric Insurance Solutions – Research and Practice
Abstract: We will discuss the purpose and origin of parametric risk transfer as well as the evolution the practice has experienced since the late 1990s up until their current state today. We will discuss in detail some novel techniques to minimize basis risk, the error between the estimated parametric model loss and actual loss. For instance, we will discuss how modern techniques rely on the calibration of a series of loss functions that are obtained with optimization algorithms or, sometimes, through regression. We will provide illustrations of recent transactions that have been placed in the market for the risk transfer of earthquakes and tropical cyclones around the world. We will also show novel approaches to wildfire and flood that are being currently deployed in the market.
