The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU invites you to a special book talk and reading of Perfect Match: The Story of Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton by Lori Dubbin, an inspiring true story of resilience, friendship, and breaking barriers in the world of tennis.

Through the powerful stories of Althea Gibson, a Black tennis player excluded from American leagues, and Angela Buxton, a Jewish athlete rejected from British tennis clubs, Perfect Match highlights the courage and determination that led them to make history together. Join us as Lori Dubbin reads from her book and leads a discussion on the themes of perseverance, allyship, and triumph over discrimination.

Lori Dubbin is a writer and former early childhood educator. She enjoys researching and writing about people just outside the framework of history who have made extraordinary contributions to the world and who model kindness, compassion, and perseverance for young readers. When Lori isn’t researching or writing, she likes taking walks, solving crossword puzzles, and reading with her grandchildren. Her children’s picture book, Perfect Match: The Story of Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection in the category of Sports Elementary Plus, (grades 2-6).

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
