Please join us in welcoming Professor Pat McDonald from New College of Florida will visit our department on Tuesday, January 25.

Abstract: Over the course of the past decade enormous progress in our ability to collect, store, process and extract value from data has occurred. Because this is the case, those positioned to participate in the data science revolution will have no difficulty finding careers that involves a wide array of interesting problems. Students of mathematics possess both foundational skills that provide them with an advantaged gateway to data science as well as blind spots that can handicap their data science progress. In this talk I will discuss how to build a data science track in mathematics that leverages the skills of mathematics students while addressing their potential deficiencies.
