About the talk:

The world should be a place of wonderment and satisfaction for young children as they explore, investigate, discover, and solve problems that are meaningful to them. Despite young children’s natural curiosity and goal-directed motivation to make sense of their world as budding scientists and engineers, there is still too little research, educational support, and adult understanding of the power of science and engineering as a foundational focus for early childhood teaching and learning. I will review the considerable national efforts to make science and engineering a greater focus of early childhood and the evidence in support of this movement including how science and engineering aligns with theories of early childhood development, allows for approaches to address equity and justice, can improve classroom interactions between children and teachers, supports learning across multiple domains of development, and can strengthen relationships between schools and families by leveraging families' funds of knowledge.

This presentation is relevant to anyone interested in understanding how science and engineering can support high-quality teaching and learning in young children including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as clinical and research faculty in psychology and related disciplines, offering content at an introductory level . The speaker has reported no conflicts of interest or commercial support for this talk.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe national efforts to make science and engineering education a greater focus of early childhood education beginning from 2007 through the present
  • Discuss three theories of early childhood development and how early science education aligns with these theories
  • Explain how early science education can support equity, diversity, and justice both in the home and in the classroom.
