Skin Deep: A Night of Tattoo Art and Community
This is a past event.
Friday, November 20, 2020 at 8:30pm to 9:45pm
Virtual EventOur bodies are our journals and tattoos, our story. Judaism has a fairly complex relationship with tattoos so, instead of focusing on it, we’re choosing to spend this Friday celebrating art, stories, community and identity.
Join OneTable, The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU and Zachary Balber as we go on a virtual tour of Balber’s Tamim installation, a body of work that suggests that tattoos, and the individuality they have been enlisted to signify and broadcast-- have become central to many individual’s self-image.
About the artist | Zachary Balber is a photography based artist who explores identity through human connections, transparency and vulnerability. In his practice, Balber permeates social and economic boundaries by using photography as a password. It is a medium in which society uses to quantify reality, but it is also easily distorted and manipulated, making it the weakest proof; despite its popularity. By acting as a conduit between beauty and reality, Balber is a spy in the hive. He is drawn to the moments that unveil the truth; the dichotomy in contradictions, the humanity in imperfection and the seemingly ordinary.
Our evening will be a mix of Balber sharing stories of the subjects of Tamim and intimate breakout rooms for us to share our own stories, ending with Shabbat ritual. A space for celebration, connection, and exploration around tattoos, so whether you have your own or are just an admirer, we hope you’ll join!
We encourage you to join us in our virtual space with your video on and ask that you respect our guests by muting yourself (unless it's time for group sharing) so we can all hear from our speakers.
