Please join us for the 145th edition of our signature Steven & Dorothea Green Critics' Lecture Series featuring internationally renowned artist Xavier Cortada.

Xavier Cortada

Over the past 30 years, Xavier Cortada has blurred the line between art and activism, beginning with early projects involving AIDS patients and incarcerated youth and extending to large-scale environmental initiatives like reforesting mangroves and creating installations at the Earth's poles.

Today, Cortada’s projects—including The Underwater, which integrates sustainable sculptures into all Miami-Dade parks—underscore his belief in art as a transformative force for community engagement and climate action. During this program, Cortada will draw on his lived experience and collaborative practice to examine how artists address pressing social and environmental challenges.

This event is free and open to the public, made possible by the generous support of the Green Family Foundation.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
