Workshop: "Constructing an Umbrella Model for the Climate Crisis"

Green Library Room 220

Following Hurricane Maria's devastation in the Puerto Rican archipelago, Ricia worked with over 100 students to record stories of survival in their communities as a way to heal, raise awareness, inform policymakers, and create datasets for disaster responders.

The project was funded by the NEA and received an MLA award for innovation in Humanities. Ricia was named a Voice of Witness Fellow and selected as a partner in the Humanities Action Lab. She was recognized by the Museum of Tolerance/Simon Wiesenthal Center as a global climate justice leader and has received funding from the NEH to create an oral history lab to fight the climate crisis and related social injustices. Ricia is joined by Aleyshka Estevez Quintana and Natalia M. Betancourt Malave, graduate student research assistants on the project who are conducting active research.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
