What does it mean to truly see our students—not just as learners, but as whole people?

Teaching the Whole Student brings together powerful essays from leading educators who invite us to reimagine the classroom as a space of care, connection, and transformation. As higher education grapples with questions of belonging, mental health, and purpose, this collection offers research-informed practices and personal reflections that speak to the heart of why many of us chose to teach in the first place. In this book group, we’ll explore how attending to students’ emotional, ethical, and spiritual dimensions—alongside the intellectual—can foster deeper learning, equity, and engagement. Faculty across disciplines will find space for dialogue, renewal, and actionable strategies to support thriving in our students and ourselves.

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
