Join the FIU-RCMI as we welcome R Lorraine Collins, PhD for an interactive presentation, The Challenges and Rewards of a Career in Academic Research. Dr. Collins is currently a SUNY Distinguished Professor and Associate Dean for Research for the Department of Community Health and Health Behavior at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

When seeking to build a career in academic research, investigators from underrepresented backgrounds can face a range of challenges and barriers. These challenges are wide-ranging and can include internal/psychological factors and external barriers. The presentation will explore ideas for acknowledging and overcoming these challenges drawn from a decades-long career conducting NIH-funded research in addictive behaviors. Among the considerations to be discussed: are there ways to reframe challenges/barriers so that they provide opportunities for growth.

Lunch will be served.
