Join us in congratulating Prof. Richard Garet on his upcoming collaboration at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC!

National Gallery of Art presents: The Changeover System

Sunday, January 12, 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.
National Gallery of Art, Washington DC
East Building Auditorium
4th St & Constitution Ave NW

Join us for a live performance by Sandra Gibson and Luis Recoder, with sound artist Richard Garet, followed by post-event discussion.

Known for their performances transforming films into captivating sculptures of light, New York City-based artists Gibson + Recoder present The Changeover System. During this singular live performance, Gibson + Recoder will work from within our projection booth to transform the film projector’s light. They will use rotating, hand-blown glass objects and other diffracting elements to bend, scatter, and distort the film’s image, redefining what cinematic film projection can be. Gibson + Recoder have been collaborating since 2000, and their works are in the permanent collection of such major museums as the Whitney Museum of Art, Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, and Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf. (35mm, approximately 70 minutes)

Florida-based sound artist Richard Garet will perform his material sound approach in real time for the piece. Garet focuses on interacting with materials’ sonic properties as both source and instrument. These include amplified EMF emissions, modified audiocassettes, malfunctioning tape players, interactive circuit boards, sonification of light, and computer processing.
